Make the most of your parenting time

Your parenting time, or custody arrangement, is finalized and the divorce process is as well. Now is the time for you and your kids to get settled into the new normal. If you are the parent with less time with the kids, you may be wondering how to make the most of the time you do have with the kids. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your parenting time.

Keep the Focus on the Kids

Use the time you have with the kids to focus on mainly doing things with them. You can grocery shop with them, help them with their homework, or go to a park and play. If you organize your time, so you get any extra work tasks done while they are away, you’ll be able to concentrate on developing meaningful relationships with your children.

Participate in Their Activities

If you live near enough, why not volunteer to coach your son’s soccer team or help with your daughter’s scouting cookie sales? The memories you make will also come with lessons learned about work, cooperation, and having fun.

Discipline Consistently

Work with your ex as much as possible on developing a consistent discipline practice. That way, your children will know what consequences to expect if they misbehave at either home. Teach constructive ways of handling anger and communicating effectively with others.

Keep the Line Open

Keep the lines of communication open with your kids in between visits by taking time to call, text, or video chat with them. It doesn’t take long, especially with texting or email, to let them know that you’re thinking of them.

Prepare to Modify

As time goes on and your kids grow into new activities and go to different schools, you and your ex-spouse may find that a modification of the parenting time agreement is necessary for the best interests of the children. An attorney experienced in family law can guide the way through the modification process and help the process go as smoothly as possible.
