Domestic violence is a serious concern in the United States

Throughout the United States, including the Lake County, Illinois, area, incidents of domestic violence are, unfortunately, not uncommon. In fact, the statistics show that incidents may be more common than most of us are aware, accounting for more injuries to women than car accidents and muggings combined.

A woman in the U.S. is beaten or assaulted every nine seconds, and three women are killed by their husbands or boyfriends every day. As many as one in three women throughout the world will experience violence or sexual abuse in their lifetime. It is important to understand that in many families in which domestic violence occurs, the abused person is not always the only victim.

Domestic abuse also plays a significant role in the upbringing of children from the family, and an unhealthy family can lead to long-term consequences for not only the victim of the violence itself, but for children who witness the violence. It is believed that as many as 10 million children each year are subjected to domestic violence in their home. Studies suggest that male children who witnessed domestic violence in their home are twice as likely to also abuse their future wives or partners.

Any instance of domestic violence during a relationship will have a significant role in the decision-making of the courts, including decisions regarding a parent's child custody. While protecting a spouse from domestic violence is obviously a serious concern, making certain that the best interests of the child or children from the marriage are addressed is also a primary concern. A history of domestic violence or even drug or alcohol abuse may be a determining factor in court's child custody decision.
