Social media is the reason behind many divorces, survey finds

There are various factors that can contribute to the end of a marriage. While some of those factors have existed for years, new factors have also been added over time. For example, social media did not exist until a few years ago. However, according to recent news reports, a survey conducted by Censuswide has revealed that the reason behind every one in seven divorces is somehow related to social media.

In order to understand more completely, readers may consider the views of an Illinois woman who got divorced recently. According to that woman, her habit of spending up to five hours a day on Facebook led to the end of her marriage. Apparently, that woman was trying to promote her business through social media; however, in the process, she connected with approximately 5,000 friends, which included some ex-boyfriends. That did not sit very well with her husband and eventually the couple decided to split up. The woman decided to address her Facebook addiction but, sadly, that was only after she realized that her marital life had deteriorated beyond repair.

In another study that focused on 2,000 married British citizens, the researchers discovered that one-fourth of all married couples fought over social media at least once a week. In fact, 17 percent of the respondents fought over social media at least once a day. Additionally, about one-fifth of the respondents said that they started feeling insecure about their marriage after discovering something hidden in their spouse's social media accounts. Ironically, 58 percent of the people surveyed said that although their spouses had hidden their social media passwords, they knew those passwords and the spouses had no idea.

Many Lake County residents may agree that social media is a very powerful tool nowadays for a number of reasons. However, if social media is not adequately managed and monitored, it may be a contributing factor when it comes to the end of even more marriages. However, social media continues to gain popularity with every passing day and, looking at the results of the survey, the power of social media in relation to divorce is a warning that married couples should heed. It may be a good idea to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
