Adoption expenses that prospective parents in Illinois may face

Illinois residents would probably agree that a child is a blessing to parents. A couple that is unable to have their own children may feel lonely and to eliminate that loneliness, adoption may be a worthwhile alternative. However, becoming parents, whether to a child whom they have conceived naturally or through adoption, can be an expensive proposition. With some careful planning and meticulous research, parents can budget and include many of the expenses that are a necessary part of the adoption process.

Adoption costs may reach $40,000. The cost depends on many factors, such as the adoption type, the adoption agency, the child's age and the circumstances under which the child has been adopted. Adoptions from public agencies vary in cost between 0 and $2,500, private agency adoptions range from $5,000 to $40,000 and inter-country adoptions are the most expensive--between $15,000 and $30,000. Prospective parents often explore all available adoption choices.

There are certain expenses in common that occur with all adoptions. Known as universal expenses, they include home study costs and expenses related to the court. There are also adoption-specific costs, for example, the agency from which the child has been adopted. If the adoption is inter-country or from a private agency. Many public adoption agencies waive home-study expenses and offer an adoption fee subsidy for children under the age of 21 years.

Home visit expenses must be paid in all adoption cases. The main objective of the home study is to determine that a family is best suited for that particular child. Home study is generally in the best interests of the child and evaluates the fitness of the parents who are considering adopting children. Prospective parents are expected to pay for the adoption. Nonetheless, public agencies may waive the adoption fees.
