Divorcing wife wants $1 million per month from hedge-fund husband

As any Illinois resident who has been through the end of a marriage knows, the process can be difficult and emotionally challenging. For couples with considerable wealth, however, a divorce can become even more complicated when it comes to resolving finances, including spousal and child support as well as asset and property division.

One high-profile split that is raising eyes is that of billionaire hedge-fund investor Ken Griffin from wife Anne Dias-Griffin. The couple filed for divorce last July following 10 years of marriage and three children. She has already been awarded child custody. Currently their split has stalled over disagreements over child support and his accusations that her spending is out of control.

Ultimately, to finalize their divorce, the couple will need to settle on child support to be paid to Dias-Griffin. Griffin, the chief executive officer of Citadel Investment Group, earns $68.5 million per month after taxes, she claims. That works out to more than $2 million per day or $92,000 per hour. His estimated worth is $6.5 billion.

As for child support, Illinois law suggests that the lowest child support should be 32 percent of the noncustodial parent’s net earnings. In Griffin’s case, that is $20 million per month. Dias-Griffin notes that she is only asking for one million per month.

Griffin has criticized his estranged wife for various costs, including a private jet, vacations, stationery and office space. She has countered that these were typical expenses during the couple’s marriage and are not necessarily anticipated future expenses.

What could weigh heavily in Dias-Griffin’s favor is an Illinois legal stipulation that a child should have the same standard of living after divorce as before it. Dias-Griffin will no doubt benefit from that standard.
