How can someone receive child support services in Illinois?
According to federal law, all states must provide child support services to families, no matter whether they receive public assistance. Child support services in Illinois are administered by the Department of Health Care and Family Services Division of Child Support Services.
DCSS provides several services to custodial parents, including locating the non-custodial parent, establishing paternity, getting an order of child support and collecting overdue child support payments. DCSS can also provide Parent Support Services to non-custodial parents, which may include referrals for job training services and a review of child support accounts. However, DCSS cannot provide any legal advice in relation to a divorce or property settlement or the modification of a custody and visitation order.
Any custodial parent can use DCSS to help them collect child support from a non-custodial parent. Custodial parents who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or medical assistance from the Department of Human Services can also use the services of DCSS. Individuals who do not receive public assistance can apply for these services either online or by visiting any DCSS office.
Once DCSS receives an application or case referral for child support services, they will send out an appointment notice and a client return notice. An appointment notice provides details regarding time and venue for the interview and the information required for the interview. The client return notice sets out information that must be submitted by the custodial parent with the regional DCSS office. Information sought by DCSS might include identity details of the custodial parent, child and the non-custodial parent, employment details of the non-custodial parent and marriage, divorce and any existing paternity or child support order that may be applicable.
