Bill allows domestic violence victims to keep their phone number

Sometimes it may not seem so obvious why a person in Illinois remains in an abusive relationship. However, simply packing up and leaving is not always so easy. This is because, in addition to the emotional abuse and physical abuse the victim has suffered, the abuser often exercises a certain amount of control over the victim, including financial control.

In fact, according to one source, 98 percent of those who are the victims of domestic abuse said that finances played a big role in whether they are able to leave their abusers. One senate bill, however, aims to help victims of domestic abuse.

Under Senate Bill 57, those who are the victims of domestic abuse and want to leave their abusers will be able to take their name off the cell phone plan they share with their abuser. However, they will still be able to retain their same telephone number if they want.

Cell phones are a necessary asset for most people these days. Not only do they serve as a means for contacting their loved ones, but they can also serve other functions, such as sending emails. Moreover, having a phone number is usually necessary to apply for a job, something a domestic abuse victim may need to do once they have left their abuser and are on their own.

While it remains to be seen what will happen to this bill as it moves through the legislative process, what is important to understand is that victims of domestic violence should be given every possible tool needed to leave their relationship. Retaining their cell phone number is just one tool that can help them seek a life free from their abuser. In addition, attorneys are available to help victims of domestic violence divorce their abusers if necessary.
